PC564 Tirana 2/7/10
Summary
- Tirana is the least interesting place in Albania, but people are stilll friendly
- Tirana is not super polluted, but it gives me a headache cos the bowl shapes keeps it in - smokers don't feel it
... People seem to like to go to expensive bars/ cafes ... So boring to me
... Only thing to see is History museum which is all in Albanian, and speial thing is the convenient cable car to the mountain.

- People met - German and Albanian wife running the hostel, other tourists mostly strange and smokers

Thu - arrive and tourist stuff
After 2.5 hours they dropped us 500m west of the main square .. Walked 1km to hostel.
- set up my hammock in the hostel
- Tourist - Waited until after 5pm but opening times .museums no longer take a siesta they close at 5pm ... So went up Sky Tower a good view
- town is not bad, but streets are still being fixed

- So other Albanian towns are better

-

Tirana Pollution gives me a headache
- I realized after a while that my eyes were stinging and my head ached. Tirana is in a bowl surrounded by hills on 3 sides and the weather was overcast so the clouds trap the polution in ... Other people said they felt nothing .. But then we realized they were all smokers.

Fri - Back again to museums
- History museum is big, but mostly in Albanian language ... Went to British Council, but they didn't have any library or event info.

- Archaeology museum ... Boring glass cases

- Next walked past the old Hoxa museum and passing the national gallery I found a Communist statue graveyard

- I then passed a bit of the old city wall which has a bad bit where a modern bar has been tacked on
- then past the old Tanners Bridge back to the hostel

Fri -pm went to the cable car and up Mt Dajti
- It's a great ride as it goes a long way for 700lek round trip.

- From the Tirana Market roundabout you take the bus east for 3Km then hop on the free shuttle. I walked as the sign sain 150m ...it's actually 1500m
- At the top is a sign saying Dajti Castle 1.2Km ..actually it's more like 3.2Km as it is 1Km past the Panoramic hotel ..but the ruins are in the forest and not much to see

- I picked some mushrooms in the forest, which I recognise from experience to be safe. I hoped to confirm this by asking the Albanian hostel owner
...but when I got back to the hostel she didn't know .. I planned to make sure they were safe by just tasting a little, but everyone elses talk at the made me paranoid..."oh you shouldn't eat those mushrooms you might get sick" they all droned. This was funny as they were all smokers so these people warning me about possible poison put certain poison into their body every day.

- Straight after eating the mushrooms I did a 180° change in mood ....not from the mushrooms as they don't reach your blood instantly, but the droning negative talk of the other people made be go from open to completely tired and full of worry. I started to question my own logic and went to the internet to check , but I was too tired to do it properly .... So I went to bed in an anxious mood

- Of course there were no physical effects at all and despite their talk I woke up the next day completely alive. Then when I went to the cyber to check properly I found this good website which shows the only ones like it are not poisonous rogersmushrooms.com Agaricus abruptibulbus or Agaricus leucotrichus

http://www.cityofwinchester.co.uk/history/html/st_cross.html Winchester `Wayfarers Dole.

- Pascal still tried to say you can't believe it's safe just cos you read it on the net. But that's crap that same information could have been in a book and you'd have to believe it. Once we say we can't believe books and can only rely on direct contact with experienced people we'd never learn much at all.

Sat - more walking in Tirana
- After the internet I walked to the house of the artist Sali Shijaku. It's supposed to date from 1400, but it's not interesting, similarly I was in the Tekke burial house of Dervish Hatixhe 1 minute.

- I want to find out about science events from the Academy of Science, but the building was closed when I passed.

- So I took the free bus from the museum to the QTU shopping mall .. Full of designer brands I hate, but Albanians love.. It has a proper hypermarket, But for some reason 220Lek coffee was 255Lek at the checkout ...tax maybe ? Albanian supermarkets are very expensive even more than Greece.

- People watched the football world cup - Get a life people football is a cheating game where so often the result depends on luck
