PC535 Being Ill 5-10/8/09
I got over malaria so I guess I will get over this .. But right now it sucks

SICKNESS SAGA
I can't concentrate 100%

- Firstly I am not really sick I can do all the things I normally do : walk, talk, eat etc
- However in the background I have this continuous mild pressure headache which means I can't concentrate so slows me down and everything beyond the most simple thing is a challenge.
- I can drag myself out of bed talk Russian walk etc. But when it comes to top of brain things like analyse and write most of the day it's too difficult
- God my strange sickness surely it's 2 different things until Sunday it was a stomach upset that also effected my brain and made me sleepy. Sunday was OK
- 2. Then from Monday woke up with a continuous headache with fever seeming like flu. Flu medicine helped along with coffee to put the brain back to normal. Tuesday took 1 tablet at 4pm and I couldn't concentrate for 2 hours. Wednesday I felt crap in the morning but coffee kept me going.

Thu- all day headache I'll try whole tablet again. - No appetite - Wow I just managed a whole game of solitaire.

-That sickness I had got much worse. Before the infection was in my stomach and gave me mild headaches. My stomach was OK, but headache was much stronger.

Tuesday worse, then Wednesday fever came Thursday was the worst day, by Friday fever had ended, but still wokeup with a headache which was mostly all day. Saturday was a little better, the headache from 10am-6pm. The headaches don't stop me walking and talking, but stop me being able to concentrate so I can't plan and prepare travel. - The big problem is that the headaches also make it difficult for me to analyse my illness, but surely this is not a normal infection so I am confused...
- My big worry is If it is moving around my body then perhaps it could get much worse.

In India 5th July from egg sandwich I got a mild 1 day stomach infection which also gave these mild headaches.
- Everytime infection cameback so did the headaches.
- but On Monday the infection moved from my stomach to my head So stronger headaches, fever etc Thursday was worst, Friday no fever 20% headache Today Saturday 10% headache but I can think properly so went to clinic in Mariupol

- Yesterday I went to the clinic. I had written the story in English, but when I got to doctor none of them spoke English or would listen. I should have asked Alexi the translator to sms a translation.

Wed- Move to Meliakino
- Juliya's apartment is tiny so it was unfair to stay more than 2 nights, but now I was a half zombie. So Wednesday I went to Meliakino a seaside town 14Km outside Mariupol. I got down from the bus at 6pm and started looking for a homestay. Unfortunately I started at the west end of town it was 8pm on the east end of town that I found a room in a Babushka house for 60Hr for 2 days.

- Thursday I was in bed all day with fever. Friday I moved to another babushka house. The babushkas are weird coming from a Soviet tradition they have little concept of customer service.. they are very rude. On Saturday at 5.45am they woke me up and said new people had arrived so I had to change room. The kitchen and toilet were outside, and often the other guests brought soup or something to share.

- The beach is the equivalent of northern beaches in England where mineworkers used to holiday 50 years ago. 9.30am and the beach is jamm packed with people lying there with a beer bottle in one hand and a cigarette in the other hand. Even on cold days people walked around in beach wear I was freezing so I was the weird guy wearing long trousers.

- I am glad I went to Meliakino there is something about it I like. It's not really the type of place I would normally go to : the sea is nice, but other things are tacky and dirty, but it does give an insight into the peoples culture.

Sat - Need all your wits to travel
- Traveling in strange countries is very challenging, but with preparation, determination luck and all your wits you can pull it off

- Friday I felt better, but didn't have the energy to go to the clinic. On Saturday I walked to the top and go on a bus

Saturday - Clinic was a pitz dietz - Today 10% headache but I can think properly so went to clinic in Mariupol

- In the afternoon at the clinic my headache was 20%, so I was confused - I made many mistakes

- When I ask for hospital they say it's behind building so I go to look for it . In Bulgaria at hospital lucky Dr spoke English I couldn't communicate with the doctors suddenly they said it's 1pm "we are closed" ... I went around the back to try another hospital.. but after waiting for a doctor to get back from lunch she ignored what I said and told me I had been in the sun too long ..."I wear a hat all the time ..you stupid woman !" I failed cos I didn't have my wits

- Sat night - Hitch-hiking adventure Arrived after the last bus back to the beach which is bizarrely early at 6pm. I remembered the road the bus uses and walked there. I took a mashruta along that road. When I finished I found other people were hitching so I joined them. 4 of us got in a Lada I saw them pay 5Hr so I paid so I got back no problem - cos I had all my wits

- Sun - When I felt better I always felt I should travel onto Lugansk- maybe on a night-train from Mariupol, but when I found an internet cafe in Meliakino I found that there was no night-train. Shortly after the police closed the cybercafe. Then I decided I should try the clinic in Donetsk so I SMS'ed Alexi and he said was OK to stay on Tuesday night.
