Decoration of Greek Pots talk |
- It was National Archaeology Week so there were supposed to be talks everyday, but there was a 2 day local government workers strike so 2 talks were cancelled. Fri 19th I went back for a Decoration of Greek Pots talk, which was much more interesting than I expected : More than 500 years before sophisticated pottery in the UK the ancient Greeks were churning out sophisticated pots with beautiful images in brown images on a black background. By coming up with a 3 stage firing they had come up with a 3 color scheme. The image was painted onto the pot with liquid clay. In the second firing the air hole was covered the painted so the background was fixed black. Then the think layer over the image could be removed so then fine white detail could be added by chipping away at the brown. The 3rd stage fixed the whole pot. They used white to represent women's faces and black to represent men's
- The images that they came up with evolved into beautiful art. She explained 100 years later they worked out that instead of painting the image they could paint the background so ending up with black images on a brown background. So ending up with even more beautiful images.

- but it was a bit of a waste of time.
I decided to hitch down and then I could see any special archaeology events at the special archaeology Museum in Lincoln. - Disappointing however - the weather was on off cloud and rain, the festival wasn't that great and the Collection didn't actually have any special events... only a new exhibition based on a film based on a renactment of images of the life of farming shown in the book The Luttrel Psalter that a local Lord of the Manor made 700 years ago

British crazy property prices
- People are running around saying property prices have dropped 10% putting the average price at US$360K down from $400K
- 1. This is ridiculously expensive compared to other countries
- 2. The media act as if it a bad thing as it assume most people are property owners, but why's it's it so bad clearly if you are not an owner then it's good news and they would be happy to see property prices drop by 70%. And even if you are owner it doesn't make any difference to your life unless you want to sell your house and move abroad. The only people who are hurt are the property speculators.
- What's all this rubbish about there being a shortage of houses ? In this county , there seem to be loads of empty houses all over the place as well as empty commercial properties and abandoned brown field sites there are hundreds of them.
- Documentaries are reporting people being conned out of money in property speculation scams. Usually they are asked to invest in land or property and then they later find it has much lower value or is actually agricultural land with no prospect of planning permission so it's worth almost nothing. One scheme specifically targettted Asian immigrants as it was advertised on Asian language TV channels.

- As I was cycling I saw a nail on the road, being a public minded person I U-turned on the pavement to pick it up so no one would get a puncture. But Ihad forgotten I had my phone in my pocket as I was listening to a podcast, so of course as I lenat over suddenly my phone fell out and smashed against the cast iron drain cover and the stylus fell off into the drain and the pile of leaves there. So i had to waste an hour gettinfg a litter grabber from the hardware store to reach down and retrieve it... bugger
