train 4th class

Petr's friend Nikolay
Train to Sludavyanka Petr had got me a 4th class nighttrain, which was dead cheap, and Petr thought I'd get a berth to sleep cos it wouldn't be crowded. Well it was packed so I had to sit up all night. I arrived at Sludavyanka at 5am Wednesday. I was on the Station floor at 7.30am trying to sleep when Nikolay appeared above me speaking Russian (Petr had mentioned his friend would meet me , but he forgot to mention he didn't speak English, he'd also not told Nikolay I don't speak Russian). Anyway we got on OK and very kindly Nickolay took me to his flat, where I had a shower and his wife made me an excellent breakfast. Then we visited the school where he is a drill instructor: training the children in marching etc ..an interesting concept. Then he took me to the local museum. It seems the town is based on a successful mine on the hill above. The Policeman saw me taking this photo .. oops I was taking a picture of government property ! he checked my passport ..that's all.
Before I left we walked down to Lake Baikal for me to throw the coins in that Tania had given me (legend is this guarantees you will return).

299 Train around Lake Baikal At 9.30am Nickolay and his wife escorted me to the local train which goes the old way around part of the lake. A strange thing : the train is only one car and full of tourists who have paid $100 for a guided tour. Seems I am included even tho I only paid the $2 for a local train

The trip took 5 hours and we stopped many times for a walk and the guide gave us an explanation in Russian.. I kind of knew what she was saying from what I had read in the museum. To be honest neither the lake nor the old railway was particularly impressive tho the lake is raved about in books. But the tour was interesting to see how the Russians did things.

in June ice
In winter the lake is so frozen you can drive all the way across. Here in June there was still ice on the stream !

Back on the train I found I had a tick in my arm. These can carry dangerous diseases. One guide smothered it with oil and teased it out. Then she put it in a film case and instructed me to take it to the lab for analysis.

I wanted to visit some small places so I got down 1Km before the end at Port Baikal. The homestay was kind and good, but when I walked round the village. I found Russian villages are more rundown than quaint.
