297a Chita - exile city

chita old log houses

The train was OK but slow we reached Chita early in the morning. This was better than Zabaikalsk a proper city with a lot more character, but still run down compared to China. A big square with a Lenin statue.. a military museum with a tank outside a lot of scruffy suburbs, a fairly sparse market. This is the town the 19c noble revolutionists (Decemberistas) were exiled. There is a non restored street of their old log cabin houses and their log cabin church. Also here is the prison Putin's court sent the ex Yukos oil tycoon to.

I had to check into a hotel to register my visa, but also I had to take a night train cos the next place to Ulan Ude is 10 hours away.
