#28a Using the Heartland/Gleick story to teach critical thinking

Let's see how Phil Plait Handled the Story

Step by step Analysis

- 1st documents are published on Green Activist websites with a press release full of loaded words
This is how the normally smart Phil Plait introduced his readers to the story
Perfidious means "Deceitful and untrustworthy." - negative words
- "leaker" - Why does he use that word when he come have used a more neutral wording like "documents have come to light" ?
Surely this is a confirmation bias : by saying the documents have been leaked that tells us 2 things : That they are real & legally obtained.
That's quite different from the way he talks about the Climategate emails as being "hacked" or "stolen"

- with the "The hyp hyp hypocrisy", he is setting the frame for the story
- It tells us : he expects Heartland to really really pursue the of the documents & show them to be hypocrites cos they didn't shout about the person who released the Climategate emails. But that's not the story that's speculation about something that hasn't happened.
- and of course he was proved wrong as they do pursue the person who released them Peter Gleick.

- see how the first commenter says "why's it not in the media yet?"

- see how the second commenter says "are they all true?" - thank God Someone knows not to take things at face value

See His Next Headline After The Confession

- Now even after Gleick has confessed to fraudulently obtaining the 4 genuine documents Plait still uses the word "leak".
- And Plait says he said "documents are real" ..well that's untrue. Heartland says the important document is fake, and Gleick in his confession does not the say it is real he says someone sent it to him anonymously.

List of Incorrect items in the faked document

- Plait is criticised for his climate stories skeptic by sovint.blogspot.com & skepteco
