Thank you for your correspondence regarding Feedback broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 18 October. Please accept my sincere apologies for our delay in replying.

As you may be aware, Feedback is Radio 4's forum for comments, queries, criticisms and congratulations, which airs listeners' views on BBC radio programmes and policy. It is not required to seek out a balance of viewpoints by listeners and instead purely reflects the correspondence it receives.

In this case we received a number of emails (why don't they clarify how many ?) from listeners complaining about the inclusion of Bob Carter on World At One. We did not receive any correspondence in support of him as a choice of guest. (Lie cos I had already tweeted under omne of my accounts the week before and I think sent a feedback a bbc form email

Claim that participant was not activist of same name

Furthermore, the name (spelled) Xe who featured on the programme was not the ‘X’ you refer to. As far as we are aware, there was no conflict of interest when his comments were featured.

The BBC’s approach to the reporting of scientific debate in general (and climate change in particular) is significantly informed by a report commissioned by the BBC Trust in 2011.

Professor Jones was invited on the programme as he authored that report. Further clarification on our position was added in an interview with David Jordan, Director of Editorial Policy and Standards, in the following week. There he laid out a case for the occasional inclusion of opinions that go against the scientific consensus – at slight odds with the approach advocated by Professor Jones.

Denier is not Defamatory They wrongly claim

We also do not feel that anything broadcast on Feedback was ‘defamatory’. Bob Carter was correctly described as a geologist, highlighting that he is not a climate change scientist. The term ‘denier’ was addressed by David Jordan in the following week’s programme – when he accepted that it was a word that has taken on other connotations for some people because of its use in other contexts, and was probably best avoided by BBC reporters. However, it is not defamatory and we would not seek to prevent others from using it to describe people who reject the scientific consensus on climate change.
