455t London Week 1
Tuesday - London

- Stew is still in London working out what country to travel to next, London is OK so no hurry, got some work to do for Panama.

Tuesday - Lecture on Conspiracy Theories

- A Dept of Parapschology event @ Goldsmiths College
- Conspiracy Beliefs: A Social Psychological Perspective - not great
- She's young I don't think she knew what she was talking about - poorly constructed experiments etc. studies etc

- SUMMARY - a few are true
- most are illogical, but plausible and ambiguous so difficult

- They are a resonse to powerlessness
- alienation, don't trust authorities
- there is a "believer" type
- reluctance to say I don't know

- little research - surely this is not true.
-what about within different cultures e.g Japan

- why, why popular ? how they affect people ?

- "It's them not me !" Most people believe they are logical, but that others are easily influenced. - this is not true

- her theory that those who believe are the kind of people who create such situations i.e. "I lie a lot so probably other people lie to me. "

- tested this - Research on children of the age when they can't spot lies easily would be good.

- Monbiot says "Conspiracy Theories let you of the hook giving you the excuse to do nothing" - this makes sense, whereas Monbiot doesn't normally

- I say 1. - Surely conspiracy, lying and conforming are all connected e.g. Standford peer conforming lying experiment length of lines

- 2. British cultural trait to never say "I don't know"
---------------

- Then exploring late night London with Ron I learnt about some good places like the Foundry in Shoreditch, another place RampART in the East End, an anarchist community centre in Loughborough Road, etc

(RampART: The rampART Creative Centre and Social Space is an occupied building in East London. Since the summer of 2004, rampART has been hosting cultural and political events, including a community cinema, exhibitions, benefit gigs, discussions, meetings and workshops etc.) ... good list of London social centres ... good list of their events

Wednesday - London

- Holborn ranger guided walk- History of the plague .. very crowded, but free .. someone mentioned the Secret Tunnels BBC Report

- My Experiment job - weird multitasking game - it was a very difficult task etc

- Wed 7pm Housemans Bokshop - Discussion on the East End Radicals - bit disappointing ..like what legacy did they achieve ? it was an interesting movement with lots of workers activities etc., but surely it just fizzled out.

Thursday -

-EEG Experiment

- Missed 2 lectures : - The Working Poor of the US @ Goodenough and Trial by media @ LSE. Instead I went to Roman Night @ The British Museum
- Lecture on Roman foods - the best bowls and implements look like they were only made 100 years ago very sophisticated work the lecture on medicine said the same ie that the technology was not bettered umtil 100 years ago.

- However the best bit was the storyteller called : Richard Neville - it was amazing how he made such a good sound with tamborine. audio

- One thing that came up is that it was not a historical logical order of Roman Saxon, Viking we learnt at School. Of course Normans were really Vikings anyway, but even the Vikings came before the Saxons and then went away again.

- Fri- went to a Free singing workshop - She was pretty good - She focuses on Singing experience for the terrified so it was African songs and fun breathing exercises - I would go again myself, but I would recommend it to others - 11 am Fridays @ Angel by Yvonne 0759 2021 247

Friday lecture : Internet Beyond Myths: the record of scholarly research

- by Manuel Castells - The students mostly loved him
- I thought it was crap - he ignored the title of the talk and banged on about Alan Greenspan etc
- The title was a bit ambiguous anyway I guess the real title should have been : scholarly research on the phenomenon of the internet wheras I was expecting something about myths being spread on the internet
... so he completely failed to address the issues such as does the internet help us get nearer to the truth or is it full of of deliberate disinformation and deception such as fake viral advertising campaigns ?

- Right at the end he did mention quickly something interesting : The danger that the big businesses/authorities enclose the internet like the rich enclosed the land 300 years ago in the UK

Sat/ Sun

- Sat - Session at the Irish Festival - not sure if the music is my taste it's a bit monotomous

- Went over to the O2 Dome for the NEW ORLEANS festival. Basically they have turned the outer edge into a mall of restaurants and clubs. The trouble was it was too crowded, walking around was through the jams was irritating. Popped into The Foundry, but the music was all "Industrial Noise" so left early.

- Sun- October Plenty Sunday 26 October 2008 - from 12noon on the Bankside outside Shakespeare's Globe .. not a good as last time, rain, crowded and last time it was warm enough for shorts ..

Sun : Film : Tommy Mcarthy : How the music flowed within him

- Sun - 8pm Evening Film Showing Tommy McCarthy Documentary Handing Down the Tunes by Ken Lynam

- The remarkable story of a man who grew up with music in the farms of County Clare. Being rural with no electricity they had to make their own entertainment so they used to go to the neighborhood houses and make music at house parties. He'd grown up with the tin whistle , fiddle and squeezebox and then after hearing a Dublin pipe maestro on the radio he'd got into the pipes.

- Coming to London caused him to develop his music further as he met other musicians he wouldn't have met otherwise. Even though he had a job as a carpenter he'd introduced his 4 children to music and there were frequent house parties. Then cos he knew other musicians and bands from the pubs, they'd pass on gigs and the kids had amazing stories of finding themselves playing at a famous persons hous like once at Jimmy Pages.

- No he wasn't a superstar, nor did he try to be he only made one recording a CD made when he was around 70, but what we see is that music flowed within him like the blood in the veins. He passed the culture onto his children, and they actually all ended up living in Clare despite having grown up in London. - Unfortunately he died suddenly died before the film was completed. I think the film could be lenghthened into a full length film showing the journey of music in life. and how the music flowed within him and the family.

- The thing was I didn't actually hear much music .. the film was short on music and the planned session afterwards never materialised
