- Since I knew this was a really special kind of festival from volunteering there in 2004 and finally there was going to be a sunny weekend I didn't hesitate when I got the call to come and help out. Bunkfest Website
- It was fairly easy hitching down I was onsite at 5pm as usual I arranged to sleep inthe marquee to guard it.
- Festivals are always full of "politics and last minute problems, this one was the same. There had been a number of things like people who really benefit from the festival like the local council and nearby pub refusing to donate any money, so it seems things had been organised at the last moment and there were 5-6 key organisers instead of the 10-15 needed, so we were always running around like crazy. I had the experience to know someone needs to be around to keep control of the important things so I ended up troubleshooting the things that had been left undone and virtually running the office. Wednesday and Thursday the traders were arriving and needed directing, signs needed preparing etc.
Fri/Sat/Sun - the same old special Bunkfest - A free town centre folk festival with performances on the riverboat, steamtrain , local pubs as well as on the main field.
- Then all of a sudden it was Friday morning and volunteers, programmes, collection tins and box office needed organising. Then it was virtually flat out for the next 60 hours- pens, gaffer tape kept disappearing and I never had time to tie them down
- I managed to scrounge the odd cup of tea off the stage and video screen crew. I got away a few times when someone else was there to man the office - Saturday I saw a bit of show in the George then did the Riverboat cruise which had The River Boat Pirates playing the hits from the 80's ....1880's that is !
- Suddenly we had some star litter pickers turn up at midnight so I was there until 2am helping .. (it's always important to get control of the litter at a festival otherwise 1. it blows away and 2. people drop more)
Sunday
- Sunday I was down the George again and caught one great performer with his many hats and funny songs ..then I dashed back to the site ..sorted out the rubbish bins and ran to the station just in time to get on the steam train.
Jo dancing to the band ..sorry no audio
Martin Mcarthy the Festivals Top Star arrived on the train
- Sunday was bit difficult cos it had rained all saturday night and the rainy weather continued into Sunday morning. So we had to dash around finding brooms to dry the stage out for the morris dancers.
- Then there was quite a bit of sitting around apart from the odd piece of lost property etc to deal with . I think the last bands were quite good, but I can't remember that much cos as soon as they finshed we had to run around closing up the festival. Again I knew from experience it's much better to get the chairs tables back in and rubbish bins etc rather than leave them over night.
Festival Cleanup
- Thank God for a bit of a lie in on Monday morning, but then the crew arrived to take down the stage. So I got up to empty the bins help the litter pickers and help with the take down. Amazingly the site which had taken 4 days to put up was down in one day. ie. by Monday night. We were all knackered so I took up the offer to crash at Geoff and Suzy's who own the the sound and video screen company.
The Cambs folk fest used a station sized stage enough to house band and audience, couldn't the stage be on rollers to roll front and back when it's raining
