A Week of Visitors
|
- Tuesday - I was expecting 2 guests so Karina left with all her bags, and she realised she had lost her credit card 2 days earlier
- waited for this guy Terry to turn up, but he never did. Czech Peter had already emailed me cos he just realised his flight would come in at 11pm. So instead of 2 guests I had none.
| - Wednesday |
- Czech Peter came in the afternoon to stay one night. I waited for Philip to fly in and phone me, but when my phone rang it was low on charge so it crashed, I put it on recharge, but he never called back, pity it was difficult to get to the apartment at that hour, but a taxi would have been cheaper than a hotel room where he ended up.
| - Thursday 2 more surprise guests|
- Peter left
Selva picked Philip up and brought him over. In the afternoon we went to the CS party at KLCC there were more 40 people there. Spoke to lots of people, but then there too many people for me to cope with and it got dark.
- On the way 2 Russians guests phoned me to ask to come to stay at the apartment and since they were only 500m away at the time they came over to meet me. Their names are Ilya and Nadya and their website is ilya-i-nadya.livejournal.com . They are real budget travellers the night before they had slept at the Sikh Temple hostel, and before they camped out at the petrol station.
| - Friday
- I think everyone stayed in our suburb. I remember going to the night market and getting 2 packets of good Durian for 5rm.
| - Sat - Bought a TICKET to LONDON
|
- I saw that Karina was looking at the Air Berlin website and when I checked there were flights to London for 252Euros. Now since summer is the UK is only July and August I was thinking if I was going to visit the UK I should do it soon or I'll have to wait for next year.
- There are no cheap flights from KL cos the government restricts permits to Malaysian companies only and AB's only Asian destinations are China or Thailand. So I booked an AirBerlin flight on Sunday 6th from Bangkok to London of course there was an extra 95 for fuel surcharge and another 25 for Bangkok flying taxes so a total of 372 Euros. Still that's pretty cheap that's not much over 200 quid.... Ooops the Euro has gone up so much it's actually 295 quid now .. so not so cheap .. well it's only money .. It had actually cot me 250quid in 2006 to get from London to Singapore.
- The thing is now I have to get to Bangkok 23 hours busride away. Air Asia was 20quid at first glance, but add in all their charges and it comes to 45... anyway their booking system wouldn't accept my credit card 3 times, so I took that as some kind of message. I might take the night bus to Hat Yai and a flight or bus from there
| - Sat - Photo talk - Human Rights Event
|
- First I went to a photographers lecture at the heritage centre called Badan warisan, but I was disappointed it was more about art than heritage. He spends hours waiting for the right light to take his black and white photos .. he ends up with pictures which he really likes to me isn't very interesting.
- Popped over to the Buddist Film Festival - You can see all the films in one day cos - the way it’s set up each of the 12 films plays everyday of the festival but in a different order
- There was a special event at the Annexe to commemorate a Human Rights activist Toni who had died of cancer at 41. I decided to go along to find out why this person mattered so much to KL people.
There was great food, an impressive show with a displays of the battles fought for womens rights, poets and writers reading, videos and a song. She must have been a woman who impressed a lot ofpeople. Apparently she had great skill at training and persuading different sides to talk together. Azmir Yunoh sang a Great Song in tribute
- cut the hugging I found it disturbing that at 2 points we were asked to hug the person next to us ..see about hugging pc435 - rememberingtoni.blogspot.com is blank at the moment perhaps cos Malaysians are too shy and afraid of saying an imperfect thing

Sunday
|
- Firstly I went to the couchsurfing party - I am still not sure how to handle such parties. I am much more comfortable with getting together for activities that we share. Firstly it began at 12pm, but when I arrived late at 12.30pm almost no-one was there. People trickled in and I spoke to a few. - Other people arrived and proceeded to walk around the entire assembly of 40 people and shake their hands and ask their name. This in a way is traditional Malay thing except they did it to both sexes when it is forbidden to touch people of the opposite sex. .. see about hugging pc435 .. it's time wasted .. it's better to have a proper conversation with 5 people .. than to "touch" 40.
- not that I can remember the names of the 5 people I talk to anyway.
- By the time I had to leave to go to the theatre at 2pm people were still arriving.
| Ten minute Plays by Youth Actors at KLPAC
|
- better there was an effort to put on a show, there was some good acting practice, but none of the 10 pieces were that striking to me as drama. Straight after watching it I couldn't rmember most of the pieces.. Could have me cos of not enough sleep or arriving late, or the uncomfortable seating. .. I know some were written by writers .. but were some just written by the actors ? I can't find a list anyway.
"I don't need to use a proper writer written piece, I'll write something myself', for God's sake actors act and writer's write ! - I can see that they were trying to be innovative and not have a long Boring play, but isn 't good Shakespeare like watching 10 separate plays.
- Popped through Merdeka Square and Central Market, but nothing special happening so I decided to to stop by a "history of new villages" exhibition on the way home as it was a little further on the same train.
| Chinese Hippy Arts House
|
- I found a place like the Lost Generation Artists house, but an ethnic Chinese only version
www.intraasianetwork.org/1948 their webpage details program etc
- "1948 refers to the year that the Seri Kembangan new village (then known as Serdang new village) was officially established. By adopting the year of the new village’s birth as our name, we convey a fundamental thrust of this space to collect, document and engage with the experiences, history, cultural identities and social changes of the local and related communities." from http://www.kakiseni.com/articles/columns/MTI2OA.html
- The exhibition I went to see and all their work I think is in Chinese as their purpose is to serve as a bridge between art and their local community.
