Thu - :Into the Circus

Arrive in Hat Rin Ko Pang Nan - After being off the beaten track this is weird so many foreigners. This like being in a themepark : there's no evidence of real Thailand at all. There are no houses, just convenience stores, taxi boat touts, cash machines, travel agencies, internet cafes and mini resorts. This is Junior Torre Molinoes. Found a place for 150B a rundown cabin right on the beach. Of course there was no one else staying there. Seems today's youth prefers upmarket most places were twice as much as mine others even swankier with pools etc at 6 times the price etc

walked thro town, what a pity there's not enough convenience stores, cash machines, Israelis and fat girls who should be wearing more.

Went right thro town and upto the lighthouse. Obvious few people come up here, yet the beach is crowded below. view from lighthouse

Walked the trail north same thing, obviously few people try it, it is very steep.

Back into town at night, Cafes with double/triple normal Thai prices screening American movies or crap US TV. The main beach has a bit of a buzz bars have hired fire dancers and stalls sell buckets of Thai whiskey. No good music or anyone dancing though. haad rin night beach

Fri - walking day- cos no cheap buses
Walked west along the beach to Ban Tai. Passing 20 quieter mini resorts . It has 7-11 etc, but down the road some real Thai people and Thai shops. Walked 2 Km up the hill.

Song thaew rip off In normal Thailand there are always cheap pickupbuses passing so you don't have to walk, but on the islands STs are dollar fifty. Seems 98% of Thais are kind other 2% are rip off merchants. In tourists places it's more like 50/50. Why don't they charge 25B + 25B for a big bag instead of a greedy 50B one person, even for small journies. I think that would be fair

Again nothing spectacular.

I had a quick look at the party beach, a few people, but not great ..people say there is a rave every Friday.. Maybe I was too early.

Too dark to party
: the clock here is too far forward,it's dark just after 6 so it's best to get up early ie 6am . By 9pm I am ready for bed not for moon parties which begin at 11am or 12am

Haad Rin product of drug money ? How can all this investment in resorts be justified in terms of payback ? 1. Even the fancy ones are pretty cheap 900B is £13, They are only full at fullmoon time 13 times a year. say they are occupied 100 days/year that's £ 1,300, say running cost & maintained is 50%, that leaves £650 to pay for infrastructure My guess is that rave businessmen like the idea of visiting Haad Rin so are investing their drug profits, without being too bothered about payback. I don't see million dollar profits been made. Though I also heard The Thai government has loaned money at only 1% so that would account for construction without income prospects

Sat- walking day
Went back to Tan Bai then up the inland road and walked the river passing waterfalls ( not spectacular cos dry season)

Breakfasted with a monk. An hours walk arrived at Thong Sadet beautiful, but boring beach.

I asked "How far is it to walk to Tai pai Noi ?" "walk ! It's so far", OK it was hot, but within 20 minutes I could see it. Certainly less than an hours walk.

Tai pai Noi beach
Very nice beaches of fine white sand. Hitched back no problem compared to the expensive minibuses.

Sun - Move to Thong Sala- SW KPN
There was no atmosphere in my hotel and Had Hai had no atmosphere for me (apart from tacy ripoff) so I decided to move on. From the SE corner I checked BanTai on the middle of the south nowhere cheap to stay. Otjer places are isolated so I decided to try the main town Thong Sala in the SW corner maybe it had more action ?.. Checked into a resort again for 170B I was the only customer.

Then I walked 2.5Km up the coast, all fairly anonymous resorts. One Cookies did seem to be nice cos the staff were friendly and people were watching a UK film when I arrived. Though it was 250B and it's too far from town.

Strangely all restaurants were closed cos it's Sunday. Big rainstorm Ate durian twice with the locals .. they seem to eat the durian too early before it's ready.

Sun - English pub
Back in town ..nothing so interesting.

At my resort the wind was strong. Someone has spacelifted a 1980's pub from a suburb somewhere in England. Like it's 100% the same. .. Not my taste though. Some English gangster with a a toydoll Thai wife ? No apparently the money is from his local wife's family who have money through selling land.

As soon as I Arrive I Leave
I have a problem - I want to stay in a place to get some writing done. But as soon as I arrive in a place I feel I have to explore, so time disappears.

Mon- internet/bad weather

Tue- internet/bad weather.
I had explored town for 2 days, but it was actually also boring. I'll try the north.

What a pity I have missed the Festival of Science in York I need to check it out on the web www.the-ba.net/

Japananese Police routinely intimidate confessions BBC Assignment prog

A hang over from Japanese pre-war culture is respect for authority. When the police arrest people believe the person is guilty. Indeed the conviction rate is 99%. But this investigation reveals the standards are worse than other countries : 1. a confession is enough and no corrobarating evidence is needed. 2. police use intimidation tactics to gain a confession. So in Japan many convictions are unsound. There is no recording of interviews. Police always pressurize for confession, this is always accepted.

"Japan has a reputation for a country with an enviably low crime rate. But those arrested face a 99 per cent chance of being convicted. The BBC's Tokyo correspondent, Chris Hogg, reports on a case of a miscarriage of justice in a small town in southern Japan which has opened a debate about the way police investigations are conducted - and why so many of those charged are found guilty."

Northern Rock Panic
The BBC report I heard about Northern Rock, explained everything was OK there was no way normal savers could possibly lose their savings. So no need to panic and withdraw your money, indeed that is the one thing not to do cos that might damage the bank. So what do you see the next day ? people panicking and queuing outside the bank.
What makes English people so stupid ?

Northern Rock - The first report said it as the markets had got tight it couldn't borrow enough money on the market, which is where it gets the vast majority of the mortgage money it lends. The Bank of England had lent the money so problem fixed.

Even if future problems arose it was OK cos it's Lending far outweighs it's own debts. So that even if the whole housing market collapsed and some borrowers defaulted the bank would still have plenty of money. And anyway in the UK small savers is more or less 100% guaranteed by government. So there would be no reason for people to withdraw there money.
