PC272 Arrive in Sabah
Mon - Me and Selva Fly in to KK
I knew to expect quite a modern city, but we were surprised to see a high percentage of European backpackers on the street. We passed about 20 hostels then checked in to Lucy's Homestay, which was basic, but central & friendly. You can tell it's a good place cos a few of the duests have been in Sabah a long time.

Mon - At the signal lookout

First we climbed the steps behind the hostel to Lookout Hill (pic above) for a view of the city. ..great view. A video of selva and KK

a run down govt apartment nearby

Mon - At the Harbour
Then we walked 4 blocks to the seafront .. some views

ferry waiting

fishingboats

We found beer is a lot cheaper cos taxes are different here. People seem to refer to the mainland as a separate country they call it Semana Jung

Then we met up with some HC members from KK

we had contacted - CKtan & Chai

Chai had to rush off back to the place he teaches 3 hours away. CKtan was an excellent host. He took us on a night tour to a beachside foodcourt & introduced us to some fruits that are not available in the mainland.

Tues in KK : Museum
We went to the Museum, which was not spectacular. Interesting for what it left out : like it doesn't mention the history of the oil industry which generates most this states money, but then the money seems to flow to the mainland/

50 years of Merdeka NOT

Like the mainland the streets are festooned with the Merdeka Independence day flags and the number 50. Except it's not 50 years here the museum displays shows the British were in Sabah until 1963 so it's been independent for 44 years. Whatever the reason it seems to me the public are being misled.

Tues in KK town center
We walked around town not amazing as it's higglydy depigglydy not well planned .. market etc It was noticeable there were a lot of Chinese businesses, but almost no Indians.

Menara Mustafa Tower
I dragged Selva out to visit Menara Mustafa, the highest building in Sabah which forms part of the seafront parliament area. As with many office towers much of the building was unused. I sneaked onto helideck .. video of roofview

Back in town we found a seafront boardwalk of restaurants for dinner.

We decided to hire a car and drive north the next day.

KK is a very Livable city
I think KK is a very Livable city. It's cheaper than KL, has a cooling sea breeze, seems much more racially integrated. For a westerner it seems like a good place to live more realaxed and less competition for jobs than Singapore or KL. Maybe it's quite like some cities in Australia. For me I like walking, but KK is enormously spreadout; it's a car city not a walking city. The beaches and airport are 6Km, so very close with a car. Now there are cheap flights it must make such a difference that it's no longer isolated from the rest of the world. I can see it growing into another Singapore.
