Thu - : Exploring Sitiawangsa
Exploring this hill was a bit of a waste of time as from the side I was at you couldn't get to the peak.

Thu - : Speed-dating night
Last month when I didn't go it was great. This month when I actually did get there it was a mess, as after the introduction 2 other loud parties started, so by the time I found out the games had been abandoned and we were just supposed to mingle it was too noisy to talk.

Fri - My phone overheated and wouldn't even reset.
I had to do a hard reset so I had to spend 2 hours reinstalling extra programs etc. Funnily even though I lost all the data like address book etc the onboard storage memory was not wiped.

Fri - Festival Gig : obtuse random plucking
This obtuse video/music gig was mostly a video of a cult American guitarist who doesn't play tunes, but just plucks randomly .. Excrusiating... Then a live guitarist came on & did the same thing ... Sometimes one sees pioneering art other times just crap... Then a Punk gig which wasn't great

Sat- Say good bye to Chi Keong
Met up with Selva and CK to go to Shah Alam to meetup with a Malaysian student just returned from study Germany so CK could get some tips before he leaves for his 2 year stint tonight.

Sat : Hunny Madu gig : boring
Billed as a DJ so I expected dance music, but she is a jazz hip hop singer so not good

Sun - Asia Jaya
new market was crap, but the Piccadilly cafe and Millenium Tower near the LRT is quite good. 4-10pm there is a flea market.

Sun - Food Not Bombs - waste of time ?
We came early ie on time @ 5pm, but there were no homeless people and I half joked they was probably another handout @ 4pm ..AND this turns out to be true. Our Lady of Grace do have a handout. So what's the point in food not bombs program ? Already it's not worth handing food out on working days when they can get food donations from restaurants . So now FNB are collecting money and handing out food to people who are already fed. It doesn't seem as if other outreach services are being offered. The only advantage is they don't push religion. One wonders if the resources couldn't be better targetted. Already I am skeptical about NGO's doing work which should be done by the government, as it encourages the government to step back from it's obligations.

Tonight we were on time cos Street theatre had been scheduled as part of the Notthatbalai festival, but both homeless and performers turned up very late. What I saw was a bit obtuse except the show in which a chair signified a country was eventually ripped apart as the 4 actors never succeeded in cooperating, but just tried to take it for themselves. See their website fnbkl.cjb.net

Book : Walk_in_the_woods By:Bill Bryson
Just finished reading this tale of their unsuccessful attempt to walk the AT, Appalacian Trail a 5000Km walk across US eastern side It teaches us what the trail experience is really like in a entertaining and easy to read way. Very well written, lots of funny incidents, but a bit irritating cos they are a bit crap at the task & ultimately fail. He understands what the tourist crowds do is crap yet has many basic failings -- takes too much stuff, doesn't check quality of maps before he goes. It shows things aren't always what they expect them to be and the failings of the US parks service.

Mon - Peter and Markiza @NBT

I felt guilty as I hadn't really pushed friends into coming as there was only a very small audience. But of course it was a good gig cos Peter & Markiza are really good folky/rock musicians. Pity so few people got to see it.
    Some sound samples :
  1. Meeting of Minds
  2. POVERTY
  3. When'ya coming home ? re-uploaded
Malaysia has never been Arab
As I understand it Malaysia has never been an Arab Muslim country. Granted there have been a percentage of Malay who obeyed all the rules. But generally the majority have not strictly adhered to all the rules. For the majority of Malay Malaysian Islam MI has been a cultural practice whereby people use Islam as a guide to their life, but pick what aspects they want to stick to i.e. Polygamy is acceptable to most men, as is avoiding pork, but they more flexible in avoiding alcohol, believing in strange superstitions & spirits, taking/giving bribes etc and other things. It seems there is now a pressure from muslims from other countries as they say muslims must obey all the rules hence for some people the culture is changing from the traditional MI. So your grandmother can no longer swim in the river like she used to. ..maybe Malaysia has never been a Muslim country
