Waterfalls and Hotsprings with Bus 43

Thu Waterfalls and Hotsprings with Bus 43
Thursday I took the bus from Bangkok Bank at 10.30 and by 11.26 I was standing next to the first waterfalls at The Kanching Falls Park . It's billed as a chain of 7 waterfalls. But none are huge and mostly it's river running at a steep 90 degree angle. Most people go to swim at falls 3 and 4. There are also a lot of picnic shelters all over. You can also bathe further up, but there'are a lot of steps to climb (more than Batu).

I decided to follow the trail at the end of the steps through secondary forest to the top. At one point there is a red ribbon trail to the right, but ignore that (as after 30 minutes it went nowhere) and continue along the side of the falls. (You can tell that is the popular trail as it has 100 times more garbage.) It's quite steep and rough. After clambouring over some rocks I reached the top where a guy stays, I guess hunting or gold panning. There the scenary changes it's like a valley scene; it's flat and the stream calm. You can see across to other hills, but nothing spectacular.

There didn't seem to be any further trails. I came down the other side, but would recommend it the trails quickly disappeared and there were no views of the waterfalls.

Practicalities - Coming from KL it’s on the rightside, the turn off after Templer Resort It's difficult to spot as there is no sign and they have built a new bridge which obscures the entrance. The bus stop is just past this bridge. It's 13Km south of Rawang so I guess from some places in KL it would be easier to take the KTM kommuter train to Rawang and pickup the 43 coming back into KL. The charge is 1Rm and there are foodstalls.

Templer's Park is 2Km back towards the city : it has river swimming and a hidden waterfall more info more info .. but I didn't stop off there.

Hotsprings On the way there just at the last apartment building as the countryside opened up and 4Km before Kanching I saw a sign saying "Selayang Air Panas". So on the way back I stopped off. It's very simple, but not as simple as Setapak. There's one pool you can immerse you body in and 2 others which are too hot so people use the water to mandi with. There are toilets and foodstalls.

Fri day Wanderings

Went to see the British Council Exhibition about British designers. I was more about people who design characters rather than creative engineering - nothing really inspiring.

Went for lunch at the 5fl foodcourt of Citibank Tower - cheap and great view.

Went to the rooftop pool & bar at 35th Fl of Traders Hotel fantastic 360 degree biew of the KLCC gardens etc. Since I was nearby I visted the Badan Warisan a heritage society with old colonial villa & traditional 90 year old Malay house from Perak. Quite interesting. Apparently their website has some good Heritage Trails r info.

A strange modern building nearby is a new 7 star private hospital.

Fri : Opening of Exhibition Processing the City

Some interesting political comments on the state of KL half of which I understood @ Central Market Annex web site

Sat : Talk by Malaysian designers
At the British Council exhibition : apart from the architects I found it art student stuff I can't remember anything special. Met up with HC guys later. pecha-kucha

Sun Music Festival

Sunday morning 3000-5000 women line dancing in the square .. Strange

Good on Alliance Francaise for organising a music fest if 50 bands .. Nothing really amazing etc. Lot of exposure for the bands. 3 stages 50 bands, KL's Glastonbury But they could have made more of it. I spent most of the time moving between the stages and only to find good bands finished just as I arrived.

Mon
Counterpoint had a surprising climate skeptic on : William Kininmonth, Kininmonth headed Australia's National Climate Centre from 1986 to 1998
