After the wedding. I went to the Flea market at Taman Jaya - bit crap

Sun Richard III with Ian McKellen

This version isn't very good. It is a very long and difficult play to do e.g. The scene where he sweet-talks the wife of someone he's just murdered into marrying him. (But the BBC animation version does it well.) He's a stereotypical scheming baddy.. But this doesn't come across in this film.

This film is set in a fictitious 1939 fascist England which is OK, And it being a film they put in lots of graphic violence and cut 70% of Shakespeares dialogue out, which is not OK. You lose a lot, sublties, jokes etc.

I was barely able to follow the plot as they cut so much out so instead of scenes developing, they start and end suddenly. Actually the text is easier to read than this film. If they hadn't had so many artistic and special effect scenes there would have been more time for dialogue.

In fact it is a happy play pleasing to Elizabeth as it sees her ancestor defeat the evil unite York and Lancaster by marrying her namesake Elizabeth and usher in a new peaceful and prsopeeous era.

I didn't really like it. Many of these Shakespeare films seem to be a waste of time.
How do you work out if a film is worth seeing. The comments section of IMDB.com is so positive cos they are all people who love movies. Maybe I should stay at home and read a book.

Mon Went to see French Film - Je vous Trouve Tres Beau ( I find you So Handsome)
I went to Midvalley on KTM at 6.30pm Monday ..wow it was so crowded I had to fight to get on and off like the Japanese metro..

When a Fench farmers wife dies, he can't find a worker wife in France so goes to Romania. All the women are bimbo, gold-diggers who immediately say " I find you So Handsome", but one is prepared to do farmwork.

Relationship where they lie : All he needs is a "wife" to work on the farm he doesn't lie to her about this. But he lies to the neighbors saying she is a trainee, who doesn't understand French and who he is obligated to train. She wants to see him as a romantic Frenchman so he has to pretend to like classical music. After he calls kids rats she has to pretend she doesn't have a daughter. So they are lying to each other, but really do begin to have feelings for each other, but can't tell. She's expects to sleep with him as part of the job, but also likes him. So when she comes to his bed, he thinks she's behaving like a whore.

She likes him, but her daughter misses her, this makes her desperately sad and homesick, but she cannot tell him. He likes her and wants to make her happy so comes back with an engagement ring, but before he can propose she takes all her anger out on him saying she hates the farm. He finds a letter saying she misses her daughter (who he thinks is her sister) and cos he now loves her, he get money from the bank and tells her she won the lottery. For a west European the money is enough for a holiday for an East European it's a life changing amount. He knows she will leave. Of course she tries to leave without telling him. He takes her to the airport. 6 months later she's sucessful in Romania nice boyfriend etc when suddenly she finds the old newspaper and realises she didn't win, and that he really must love her. So she goes back to him with her daughter. And they live happily ever after.

It would have been more believeable if the age difference didn’t seem so big. The other actors made a good job of portraying French bumpkins. Surprisingly they are not racist to her, indeed all the French women in the film are ugly and so the boys always surround her.
The Message ? If they had talked to each other properly before they would have never had the problems in the first place, they are both stupid in this. .. Love wins through.
It wasn't a great movie, but it wasn't tedious and irritating like most Hollywood films.

Tues - saving a Dying Language
Went to MCG lecture about a tribe of 750,000 people in Sarawak. They don't speak their own language at home anymore, and especially since priestesses and dying and not being replaced the subset of "ritual language" is being lost. It is estimated that 50% of the world's 6,000 languages are endangered. One language disappears every two weeks. With this in mind, we will spend the morning discussing one endangered language - the traditional language of ritual amongst the Kadazan people of Sabah. In January this year, the Kadazandusun Language Foundation recorded a traditional rice harvest festival to document the ancient words of the high priestesses of the Kadazan. Still no young girls are interested in preserving the practice.

They have almost all converted to Roman Catholics and education is in Malay. They have money jobs and cars, so if they have difficulty saving their own heritage, what hope is there for poorer tribes. It was a quite well organised event and it was strange that I was the only male their almost all the others were expat wives. Again it was a pity no one explained why tribal culture is important.

Tues - Went to see French Film : Fauteuils d'orchestre (Avenue Montaigne)
Not terrible like American films, but not great either, maybe should have read a book instead. A grandaughter is told by her grandmother how she got to see the lives of the rich & famous by becoming a chambermaid at the Ritz. So she gets a job as a waitress in a café which is near the theatre, concert house and art auction. So she gets into the life of 3 famous people : a concert pianist who wants to get off the posh circuit, an adored soap opera star who wants to do serious acting, and a millionaire with gold digger girlfriend who's selling his art collection. All 3 succeed and she ends up as girlfriend to the millionaires son, who receives the most prized art piece in a gesture of reconciliation. Refined version of Pretty Woman : fame will come if you hang around the rich , why doesn't the headwaiter have an actress girlfriend then ?

Went to the musical - Broadway Parodies Lah
I had my finger over my mouth most of the time kind of unsure/squeaming. You see though they attempted to be funny it usually came across as very contrived. And also drama school cliché of forced smiles tits stuck out "look Mummy I'm so talented". Though to be honest every performer had their moments of genuine talent. The notable songs included : A girl called Marina, Tra lah lah- Malaysia- (America), Wanna be like a Dame, Come to the Karaoke, Live in Damansara, Datin, Boh Doh lah why you look like dat,

Kind of wished I hadn't gone, but you have to 1. support local art 2. Take a chance.

Is it worth it ?
In the last 6 days I have been to the cinema 4 times, theatre twice, seen 2 gigs, been to 2 lectures, 2 shows and the writers reading . That's 13 times, but most were pretty boring I suppose should I stay at home and read a book.

Will go to Singapore or Thailand soon.
