I just realised that it was also the opening night of "I don't want to sleep alone" - at Cathay Damansara so maybe most alternative people were at the movie last night ?

Freedoms Film Fest DVD for loan
I found out about Setapak Hot Springs also rimbundahan
Friday - National Theatre + Eye
Fri - I knew there was a free shadow puppet show at the National Theatre so I took some of the guys from the hostel. We were ushered in to the plush enourmous main theatre and sat in the front of the middle balcony. And then found it wasn't the puppet theatre it had been moved to Sat and Sun instead it was an extravaganza by the Chinese Tourist Board. Bit strange, Hawaian dance routine, Spanish song etc a bit tacky. We left after the contortionists.

Unfortunately the lightshow at the Eye had already finished. We went on the Eye which was OK, but the main sight is twin towers. You get to go around 5 or 6 times. I think it's probably better in the daytime.

We went to look at Heritage Row a street of restored buildings containing expensive nightclubs with Ferraris parked outside. Actually there are cheap foodstalls at one end; we sat there and smoked waterpipes.

Saturday -MINDS Expo of new inventions at KLCC
Not amazing it was mostly university students projects, mostly more optimistic than practical. Board game PC interface - it looks good you move your counter across the board, the TV camera feeds the signal into the PC and it appears as a striding warrior on the screen.. Surely you might have real VR ? One showed a device which emits citronella and keeps away mosquitoes. Why not just spray cintronella on yourself ? Another showed how a spray developed from a leaf keeps away flies. If it as works as well as the photos why isn't it already being used.

One display by FRIM showed uses of bamboo laminate timbers for use to replace wooden scaffolding which is not reused here. Well why not use metal and have it completely recycleable. One sample they had was completely bent.

There were large displays from the Iranian & Russian trade bodies. Iranian 1. car powered streetlights .. A section of the road is springloaded so that when a car drives over it the weight pushed down on a generation mechanism. 2. One boy showed his AC system with built in smoke sucker. I pointed out that in a fire you don't want to suck the smoke out as this would draw in fresh air and therefore fuel the fire. It would need to be coupled to a system which pumps nitrogen in without suffucating people . 3. Nuclear fuel rod handling devices - Is this a wind up ? Incidently when I read the austere Russian catalogue (no photos) tucked in with all the waterpump parts and laser cutters : was this 300 MW Thermo-Nuclear power generation plant. what the ! When you read the detail you see it is in the R&D stage and maybe available in 5 years tiime. I presume it's another wind up.

Saturday - Big Tour
We went back to see the shadow puppet theatre (Wayalang Kulit), but I suggested we check Merdeka for events first and then walk through the night market. We found they'd set up a large screen for The English FA cup final 10pm local time. The shadow puppet theatre was in the garden at the back of the theatre, wasn't so exciting a bit slow. After 20 minutes we walked to see the Sound and Light show at the Lake. It wasn't as overwhelming as before as the volume was quiet (complaints from residents ?). On the way back as we passed the Coliseum I saw there was traditional dancing so we stopped to watch, before continuing to the game at the square. Not many people - lack of publicity I guess.

Sun - Throne of Blood - Japanese version of Macbeth
First I went to Times Sq the Everest: Beyond The Limit Exhibition. Then Low Yat bought headphones, but first 2 sets faulty. So took bus up Jalan Ipoh - pretty fast.

Nowhere near as good as other Macbeth productions. Some people raved about this film, good job of transferring to a Japanese setting Paul tried to argue that it was OK that Kagosawa doesn't use the original text, cos he creates the image with the camera, but I disagree it loses so much. No talk of none born ofwoman" , nor the gatekeepers comedy scene. Instead we get Minimalistic lacking depth of other Macbeth prods cos so many parts missing.

Nothing else happening wasted time.

Might go to see the new Adlin film.
