Wed Young Lawyers debate
not exactly as exciting WWF - wrestling show, is it ? Bit different from last week, 4 person panel. Presentations, then 2nd round. Quite poorly attended. They convinced a Islam expert to come, but he turned up 30 mins late, the liberals all agreed and their presentations were bad cos their slide shows were twice as long as the time allowed.

Debate : Re-thinking Malaysia in Commemoration of Independence
Youth Roundtable : .
Debates not exactly as exciting WWF - wrestling show, is it ?

Nik Nazmi
  • Communalism (living within own race) still the norm
  • Politicians spin everything to be racial issue
  • A wins B loses NOT true
  • Muslims often resort to seige mentality looking in instead of out ignoring Fatwas against bombing
  • Muslims focus on details not the spirit of Sharia
  • UNITE all races a problem for 1 individual is a problem for all
  • Unequal, understands why NEP arose, but hijacked by political elite
  • Freedom worse, constitution eroded
  • Malay middle class increasing
  • Bangsa Malaysia

Richard Wee
Spoke mostly about law
  • old cases mostly religious issues, laws clarified so less now
  • Tinkering with Constitution, news laws often contradict fundamentals 5-13, but 1987 changes to Judicial control mean meddlesome judges do what told to by politicians
  • so now some laws ridiculous like stolen land can be sold
  • LJ case is Muslims bullying
  • clerics threaten him
  • Bad things caused by politicians saying MY is Islamic state is bad, land only for Bumi, unfair scholarship awarding, and thinking religion only way to unite Malays.
FUTURE
  1. Renew Constitution
  2. Replace race based parties
  3. No Discrimination ie abolish NEP
  4. Transparency to End Corruption

Mazuki
(guy from the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement ABIM)

  • disagreed he sees increasing multiculturalism outside politics as people move from communalism to individualism ( I suspect Malay muslims are getting muslim friends from other cultures and dropping their other Malay friends )
  • seemed to say BN is associated with iliberal democracy
conflict between individual liberalism and communal religious. Said people need to be liberated ie given free choice. When I asked him whether the tradition of respect for Authority in Malaysia should be changed, he showed his true spots saying yes parents, religion and injustice are priorities to me seems is saying religion is all, so that's not individualism.
  • Religion has become a tool of politicians, but at the same time liberral policies have been allowed like Permitting lion dance & scholarships for non-Bumi.

Tricia Yeoh
Malaysia is a confused adolescent, inconsistent & lacking clear policies (Didn't Mahatir fix this ?)
bad things like enforced flag flying

A clear confict between Policy & Feelings
EQUALITY - constitution
20/20 unity
Emphasizing Bumiputra
University to International standards NOT
FREE TRADENo Level Playing Field

Open up old wounds so can heal

  1. Policies should be based on principles
  2. Unity Comes from Equality
  3. No need to classify people ?
FUTURE
  1. be honest about past
  2. get rid of false suspicion
  3. be inclusive
  4. compromise for collective good

Government pushes communalism and allows religious discrimination like destroying Indian temples

Questions I didn't get to ask
What happens to Malaysia when the Oil runs out
Do people think Malaysia has a problem with Property speculation ?
Do people think Malaysia has a problem with a wealth divide ?

Idea for exciting debates the Chocolate Challenge
