- Sat - since there is no power 9-11am I came back to the café at before 8am they'd said it would open at 7.30am, but of course no one came. Library no worker there, got to school which is 8Km out of town.
- Quite impressive in 19 years it's grown to 550 pupils basically 1 class per year. It costs 1000Rp/month including the bus and is a non profit trust.
- Still I am opposed to private schooling on ethical grounds.
- 1. All children should be equal, it shouldn't depend on ability to pay. So it should be the states job to pay; they could then sub contract the work to private companies etc.
- 2. If workers are so cheap in India, why not have 3 classes per year instead of one 50 pupil class.
- 3. Not enough pupils to stream properly. Government schools can stream pupils into classes of equal ability instead of stuffing all abilities into the same class.
- But if you come in and start a school, which is better than government then isn't that a good thing ? 50 pupils each year benefit from a better education than they would have done. This town seems to have about 30 different private schools catering by religion, language etc. Even if you nationalised the schools you'd still need 4 types ?
- If private and church do a good job then you see why the government sits back.
- In the long run if government schools are failing they need fixing.. Just providing a solution to a minority who will pay is not good enough.. No child should be left behind. Suppose the government could give each child education vouchers, but then money would get wasted in a advertising machine.
- School only runs in the morning so went back to Tyrones house for lunch - Bit of a strange day cos everyone was excited by the election results coming in. For me it's a load of TV brainwashing pazaaz, If you wait a day you get all the results in a moment instead of wasting hours. Congress getting re-elected isn't like a big change like Obama or a war ending. Even if stability allows them to run some good programmes there'll still be many corrupt cronies. I suppose people think M Singh represents New Congress as opposed to the Congress that was so less effective than European or Asian Tiger governments.
- Whatever Happens Nehru Wins- Indian politics is weird anyway : 2 Nehru family members head The Congress Parrty while 2 other Nehru family members head the opposition BJP the other big party.
- We went to meet Tim a juggler from Sheffield who has lived here 10 years.
- How much are people's emotions whipped up by TV, my room has TV so it's the first time I really watched ..it's crap and so banal
