Once in Shillong everything was easy

- Tuesday - the nightbus arrived at 4am stayed on it sleeping.
- 7am a short walk and I found a women selling Khasi food : Jado and Beef ...much better than Bengali food ... and another short walk to the cheap hotel.

What a pain everything I have is broken
- What a pain everything I have is broken ..my clothes are about dead so I picked up my others from Mayfereen's house, but I'll have to buy new shoes, fix my bag etc

- The internet café PC I used to use is now crap and put a virus on my stick. On top of that my PC phones not working. It doesn't like overnight bus journeys... must be the heat and sweat.

- First the screen kept going strange, rolling pattern etc... Turns out the ribbon connections are very sensitive to pressure or humidity. Then the touchscreen stopped working completely. Sunday first I made it worse, but now it's 90% OK.

What a pain everything I have is broken

- Wed - repairing bag etc. - met Rodrigo in the street who gave me the news etc

- Thu- washing clothes- find better internet

Fri - NEHU University and Science Centre

- I heard there was a Science Centre at NEHU University 7Km SSE of the city so I took a taxi from Polo Ground to Mawlai. After that all the taxis were full so I walked the last 3 Km.

- Science Centre - It's one of a sset of standard design Science Centres across India. It wasn't bad cos it's unknown it doesn't get busy like the one in Guwahati, so not many things were broken.

- 2 interesting things A straight line is not always the fastest route ... under gravity a cycloid path is faster

Fri - NEHU University and Science Centre

science_centre
- A simple Archimedes screw pump can be made by wrapping plastic pipe around a tube or barrel.

- Explored the campus- Usually I don't like campus universities cos they are spread out getting around is inconvenient, but in this one most of the departments are in a 750m long U shaped building. I went on a fruitless search for a map, but it's some kind of state secret. The geography dept have a mapping program, but they reduced the resolution so much on the copy they gave me it's unreadable.

- Walked around the pine forested campus ... Met Mayfereen's brother Mac at a University "strongest man" competition. Most classes had been cancelled that week on some pretext.

- Got the university bus back ... Met a teacher from the university high school "Yes we teach in both languages" ... "You mean the local Khasi language and English ?" .... "No Hindi and English" .... The school doesn't even teach in the local language !
