India Ideas & Opinions 3 Hindi Cultural Domination
1. Cultural Differences - 2. Dirt & Hassle - 3. Hindi Imperialism - 4. Culture Causes Poverty

- Hindi Kills Culture
- Tribal culture is very important cos once the language and culture are lost it's diffcult to get them back. So I am concerned about the dominance of Hindi cos as people get involved in Hindi culture thay begin to lose their own.

- Assamese or Megalaya or Mizoram people often watch Hindi movies, but how often do Delhi people watch a movie in any of the tribal languages ? .. as Hindi is bing strenghthened then Tribal and minority culture is being weakened

- This recognised by people in Nagaland and people are often shot by terrorists for being Hindi Speakers .. which of course is not right.

- Delhi Hindi Imperialism - India is not a country
- sign at University "teaching of Hindi as a 2nd language"
- What the F is that ?
- 1. This is Assam, many people are speaking their tribal language at home, and Assamese at work so Hindi would be a 3rd language.
- 2. I don't accept India is a country . It's like the European Union i.e. India is just a governing body with different countries within it.

- Governments should speak the language of their bosses ... the people not force them to conform to it's language. People in Wales can learn Welsh and do all government business in Welsh. They can as most do learn English if they like, but no one says they have to learn French cos the EU is centred in Brussels. Likewise people of all states should only need to learn their own language and then if they want the language of the state : Assamese, Tamil, Gujarati etc.

- Hindi is not the national language- Like German in europe it's an imporant language and spoken in more than 1 state, but German isn't the national language of the European Union.

- Unfortunately English is the International language. Yes there are some transnational organizations like the Indian Army so I can see the government saying it needs one language, but it would be better if there were only state armies, that way the army could relate to local people better instead of being perceived as Hindi outsiders

India Colonised by Nehru (Ghandi) Family
- India went from being colonised by the British to being colonised by the Nehru (Ghandi) Family - They have controlled almost every government since independence when will they quit the rest of India ?

India Colonised by "Foreign Business"
- Even the Indian company Tata bought most of my town in England ..Foreign companies are forbidden from controlling Indian companies.. "We don't want them foreigners ruling over us and dominating our culture" - Yet when you go to the main street of most Indian towns you find people speaking Hindi ..Why ?cos the businesses are not locally owned certain ethnic groups like Rajputs and Punjabis have effectively colonised the businesse all over India .. therefore disempowering the locals some of the profits that should stay in the local community goes back to Rajistan etc

The Overwhelming Dominance of Hindi
- Even in small villages as I passed tribal houses I saw people watching Hindi movies rather than movies in their own language. Even in Nepal people sit around watching Hindi movies. Does Hindi dominate music the same way English dominates in the rest of the world ?

- I noticed in Rita's film about a Mizo athlete 60% of the film was taken up by the Indian national Anthem - could be due to brainwashing in school history lessons ?

- I noticed in Malaysia they talked about National Unity and that's rubbish as well as there are only people not people belonging to a geographical location.

- Lost the village culture, but not yet got "educated" values

-1. It was interesting to hear what Devabrata observed that hill tribes behaviour has got worse since they got TV and they are behaving much more like people from Delhi.

- That they had a better morality before ... with TV and urbanisation they have declined, but have not yet got the "education" and awareness of developed countries, which have better attitudes.

- I certainly prefer the hill cultures of Megahalya and Mizoram to the crowded plain city's where there seem to be much more "stupid" and irritating people.

Western does not exist
- It seems many Indians want to believe there is a dichotomy "Oh, Western values, are for western people, but not for us."

- it's a convenient shorthand to say "Western", but in fact values are not geographical they are just modern newer and better as opposed to older and worse. Like saying it's not acceptable to beat your wife, believing all people should be treated equally etc.

- I believe that values, attitudes and culture wil in future get better and better, like the same way we no longer accept head hunting, or slavery.
- Say Modern not Western

- Lost the village culture, but not yet got "educated" values

-insurance man's despair at false claims

Khasi food - Sometimes I feel like the guy spreading misery by saying that Santa Claus doesn't exist .. i.e. In the way I dispel their naïve simplistic fantasies , but I proved you can travel to see for yourself at low cost. - The thing is I expose the discomfort of what is different rather than what we share in. .. But apart from fruit and truth what can I share ?

More Nepalis outside Nepal
- First of all it's surprising to find there are so many ethnic Nepalis in the North Eastern states : North West Bengal and Sikkim are totally dominated by them, but pockets are widespread through all the other states.

- Why don't Nepalis identify themselves by tribe first ? - There are about 20 Nepali tribes and 18 have their own language. One of the strangest things to me is when you ask them their name it often shows they are a member of one of the 18 tribes that have their own language yet they still identify themselves as Nepali not Tamang, Rai, Limbu etc even though they or their parents have never been to Nepal . And it's not only to foreigners ... many of them livein India and speak Nepali, but they don't know there own tribal language.
- If you meet an ethnic Welsh person in Argentina I am sure they would identify themselves as Welsh rather than British.
