Overseas Travel Expensive for Indians

- Middle class Indians keep telling me overseas travel is too expensive for them.

- yes the foreign prices are the result of the relatively low value of the Rupee. It won't always be that way and in the meantime there is always another country whose money is even lower like Indonesia, Egypt, Laos etc that Indians can enjoy.

- 1. There are cheaper countries to visit.

- 2. Because few Indians travel then it seems packages from Indian agents are very expensive. It's a luxury market rather than big market in Europe where they sell millions of holidays every week. Certain Airlines like Uzbekistan and Aeroflot offer good deals direct, but for others you have to use an agent who usually want a big margin. Shops in the backpacker areas of Delhi might offer good prices especially a day or 2 before the flight, but that is not convenient with workers who only have fixed holiday dates.

- 3. It's actually an advantage that it's expensive as this forces us to travel at a simpler level by being closer to the level of local people i.e. Staying at a local hotel rather than the Hilton we experience the real local culture.

- 4. The second biggest costs are accommodation, that's where organizations like CS, HC annd SERVAS are good, but don't expect free accommodation in the centre of London or Paris ... smaller towns are easier to find.

- 5. Keep costs down by doing all the free things first like walking and taking advantage of free museums and festivals instead of being lured into expensive tourist traps.

- 5b. You could try volunteer working holidays like BCTV where they often give you free accommodation.

- 6. You could look for cheaper equivalent countries say Eastern Europe instead of Western Europe, Taiwan or Korea instead of Japan.

- 7. Taking one big trip in one year and no holiday the next instead of 2 lots of flights.

- 8. Never travel on a public holiday, if everyone else is on holiday then it's a sellers market.

- Foreigner prices = Racist prices : so are Unacceptable
- It sounds so easy to say foreigners currencies are stronger
.. In practice works out to be racist pricing so is clearly unacceptable
.. Same service same price irrespective of skin colour.

- "Ah well those foregners are much richer than "us"" - What a naïve premise cos Eastern bloc countres and Africans earn less.. whereas many "us" other indans are millionares. Some are slave owning millionaires. So that's what's objectionable is the huge discount given to rich Indians..

-I earn $400 per month National parks are free in England. It's a gross over simplification that doesn't maximize NP income the normal way is to have a variety of options which people choose to fit their incomes with discounts to genuine poor.
- 1. It becomes white face pricing
- 2. I don't mind paying what is reasonable to me
- 3. - the Indian price seems to cheap not worth collecting.
- 4. There is not accepted principle of rich pay more
- A lazy guy gets the low price

- the point is 1000Rp is a lot of money to me

Fucking Foreigner Prices Yes the "fucking" is intentional it's outrageous the government is being racist and setting an example for taxi drivers and shops to follow. Weak people might not be willing to stick up for themselves, but I damm well will. I can't imagine a sign in Enland that says Whte faces £10, brown faces £20, No, no, no, There is a principle of equality same service same price.

- Given that rant actually India isn't that bad now, foreigner prices are no longer double the realistic price, they are often below a realistic price so I don't mind paying. They need to write :
- Normal Price $5
- Indian taxpayers/ student discount 50%

- or better still push Indian wages up to proper levels instead of buying people off with stupid discounts.

if I can give a discount the 2nd time you ask then I was trying to rip you off the first time

- Cultural difference if I buy something in England and the guy said it's 1000Rp and I said can you give me a cheaper price and he said 700Rp that would be really bad as it means he was trying to exploit me in the first case he should have just come up with the 700Rp price straight away ..as you are supposed to give people the best price straight away.. Bargaining is possible, but I would have to giving him some motivation like I'll buy 5

Cellphone etiquette - I don't think British people use cellphones like in other countries

-- mainly on the principle that if someone is talking to someone else or busy doing something then it's rude to interrupt them. So we tend to be more careful about calling, using other means like email or text first and scheduling a time to talk by phone. If you called me and I was with someone or eating I'd either have the phone switched off or just say I'll call you later. '
