Cultures that like to Complain : British, Oz and Jewish
- We can say generally that Americans are positive whereas British like to complain to themselves all the time. Australians are even worse and then it turns out it's part of Jewish culture as well; they even have a special word for meaningless complaints.
On Radio Canada a writer talked about Kvetch ... some cultures complain about everything so when they are complaining about something small then you know you are doing a good job.
| Not Racism, Just Self Selection
- On the Point Of Inquiry podcast someone questioned the skepc/rationalist movement being mostly white male. He brought up an interesting point" Most of the primary school teachers in my area are females, but that doesn't mean there is sexism keeping out men. Sometimes individuals select themselves out "

Why women like ugly men | - An otherwise unfunny comedian did point something interesting out
- Women don't really care whether a man initially looks good or not cos they see a relationship as a kind of project ..similar to house alteration. She will change and mould him into what she wants.
- When women choose a new home they want something that looks perfect right now, whereas see it as a project "ah this house is not perfect, but I can change it ..take a wall out here, build an extension here" etc.
- When a men choose a woman they are only interested in a woman that looks beautiful right now, whereas a woman sees the man as some kid of project ..he might not be perfect now, but she plans to mould and change him into something much better.
: House prices expand to fit the money available
| The Trillenium
- It's strange to me that people make a lot of fuss in the year change from 1999-2000, saying "Wow it's a whole new century", but no one has mentioned that we are in the 3rd millenium : the trillenium
| false stories in the Press
- A new documntary movie called Starsuckers managed to get 10 fake stories about celebrities printed in the newspapers. Basically they phonedthe tabloid newspapers with interesting, but not too bizarre stories and the newspapers printed them without checking the facts they even elaborated the stories. The BBC and heavy newspapersclaim to always check their facts, but they once the fake stories had been printed the BBC did report them saying something like : "according to a report in the Daily Star" ...just shows how pathetic the tabloids are.

started me thinking : Yes the church is evil
|
- I see Penn and Teller made a programme "The Catholic Church is bullshit" and some American politicians have tried to get it banned
- and that started me thinking.
- The established religious organisations like the Catholic Church are the richest organisations on Earth ...They seem to have a vast portfolio of money, property and resources. Are they really using their vast resources effectively ? - Yes a certain number of working hours and resources are spent in teaching in hospital work, but a huge percentage are not. Ostentacious bishops robes don't exactly send a message of equality and help the poor.
- If you could cut out all those hours praying and in ceremony the time could be used for more beneficial things like medical research.
- And look no religions seem to be organised in a democratic way ..they seem to be organised by unelected people who are usually male.
- Surely the big churches could do something like sell all their land and property and they'd have billions of $ to help people in pain and poverty ?
- They criticised the church for killing people by banning contraception, covering up and oppressing homosexuals etc.
| I suddenly
understand why house prices are so expensive in the UK
|
- Most products have an intrinsic value a big loaf of bread costs twice as much as a small loaf, but houses are different. You are not actually buying physical bricks, you are buying a dream. Certain things influence the value like the size and the location, but what basically do you pay for a dream ? Yes size and location do influence cost, but most people want the biggest dream they can get i.e. biggest size and best location. So it's such a big thing you'll pay all the money you can get. And the whole estate agent industry is geared up to push, push, push the dream.
- Prices expand to fit peoples capability to pay. So higher salaries or easier loans = higher prices. - This explains why prices in different countries for similar properties are so different. - When a countries average salary doubles, then the average house size they have doesn't double. No the price of the existing houses just doubles as well.
- just as work expands to fit the time available house prices expand to the the money available.
| Alcohol only effects adults
- BBC Horizon showed experiments where pre-teenage children. Amazingly they didn't get drunk, the way adults do.
