TV Prog About Infinity
- The last 80% of the Infinity prog wasn't very good.
They claimed there was a lot of paradoxes with infinity, but it seems to me they are not definiting infinity properly e.g. if the number of all numbers is infinity then the number of all the odd numbers is not infinity.. it is endless, but it will always be half infinity.
| People Can't Count : Including politicians
- I often say that normal people can't count as they don't seem to have a basic feeling for numbers. And on Channel4 TV and Women's Hour yesterday there programmes about adults having problems helping kids with their homework. Then in the afternoon the Conservative Party politicians launched their new report and quoted a figure it has 3 times in it that under this Labour government the official figures show that in 3 deprived areas 54% of girls below 18 are pregnant ... Then someone pointed out that official figures are 5 point 4 %. Yes the people writing the report had missed out the decimal point .. It's absolutely staggering that these politicians are so out of touch they think more than half the girls in a neighbourhood are pregnant before 18 ... Why didn't they realise straight away ?
| 1930's Airship flew around the world / Eel Tags
|
- There was an interesting documentary about how randolph hearst sponsored a Zeppelin in a first vogae around the world. That was well impressive that this was done in the 1930's and it wasn't until the 1990 that balloons flew such distances. I thought surely it' was very risky what about storms. Indeed it was damaged in the Pacific, and lost height so they spent 2 days just above water, but then they managed to fix it and fly all the way to LA.
- Another prog mentioned a study on eel migration. Theoretically the eels should die in the Caribbean and the currents should wash the red tags all the way back to the UK beaches and you get 50 quid for handing one in
- Another prog featured a teacher starting a lesson with a silent activity e.g. Puzzle to focus the students minds. - It seems like a very good idea to me

Most dating Sites are a Ripoff
|
- I researched the dating sites. Most like - Match.com (wa Yahoo Personals), e-harmony.com are a ripoff allowing you to signup and search for free, but then when you try to send a contact email you find that you have to signup to membership with a stiff monthly fee.
- Gumtree used to be free, but they closed it down 2 weeks ago.
- metrodate is now free, but few UK members
- So I checked the free ones like
- 1. Myspace - not many members and then when you filter out the fat people and smokers, you might have only 1 left and "she" is more likely to be really a man.
- 2. Friendster seems to no longer possible to search or browse...ah you can search, but you can only search by keyword there is no advanced search so unlike Myspace you can't search by age or yor area and if you search on say "Chester" it brings up everyone located in Chester and everyone named Chester
- 3. Bebo : seems you can do a general search, but no myspace like dating search.
| Valentines Day is another symbol of madness in society.
|
- If people have a partner then they should celebrate everyday.
- The media and commercialism hype perpetuates the myth "that love is easy to find" and "there is someone for everyone" so makes "single people" feel bad for having "failed" ... apparently 33% of people over 45 in the UK are single
| Just like 50% of Advertising doesn't work 90% of Capitalism is a waste
|
- there is a famous Idea that 50% of advertising works and the other 50% doesn't work ..but you can't ell which is which. I would say in consumer capitalism 90% of products are crap and only 10% are really useful. The things I believe in
include : Tescos, Poundland, BBC, libraries
- Things which are crap : Sport, Lotteries and gambling, commercial TV, Hollywood movies, drug, alcohol and smoking culture.
- Actually I would move away from saying 90% of capitalist products are crap as those products and services which are used by other business at least have the discipline of profit behind them. Business to business capitalism is mostly useful i.e consumers will buy any old crap, but a business will only buy a product if
works otherwise it's a waste of money .. there are exceptions of course
