Adventure History holiday in Nepal

- Experience history a place without electricity etc..

Why the hell do people cook on open wood fires ? - big waste
- All over Nepal I see people cooking on an open fires .. But why it's such a waste if work and energy ! They spend hours every morning searching for wood.
1. They don't use seasoned wood often instead they burn fresh wood .. So that's inefficient
2. Charcoal is never used, but it's a much more efficient way of using wood.
3. Iron stoves like Russia are much better - but I never saw any.
4. They cook many times a day , but with cultural changes they could cut that to 1 time each day - I guess if women are always around the house they can fill their time with cooking, but if they didn't they have time to get a lot more things done.
Strange Cultural Beliefs
- Thankfully as a foreigner I can get away with breaking most of the taboos. Hari seemed quite pained about 2 things :
- 1. I always sit with my knees together in a tempo to give other people space .. He seemed to say a man should sit with his knees apart.
- 2. The Kathmandu laundry had lost my scarf so when I passed someone selling children's track trousers for 10Rp I bought it and used it as a scarf .. Again this pained Hari as I was using something fro the "dirty" half of the body on something near a sacred place like the head

- Some Nepal Conclusions
- The Nepal of today is not the same country travellers raved about 15 years ago. The beautiful Himalayan skyline, the diversity of tribal people and a calmer and less hassling atmosphere are still there, but this is a country damaged by 10 years of civil war and in the meantime other countries have moved on leaving Nepal behind. So I wasn't impressed like other travellers were in the past.

- Though maybe it was my fault for spending too much time in urbanised areas maybe I should have got right into the far mountain villages where the culture is more exotic like the 1. The tribes who quite liberal and never marry, but just bring up thheir children as their brothers or 2. The tribes where a woman might have 3 husbands.

- I now realise that such exotic mountain culture is not confined to the borders of Nepal. Travellers could very well experience the same scenary and cultures more easily in NE India.

- So many Nepalis see other countries as better to live and want to leave. Normally I discourage people cos the west is nowhere near as good as they think it is, but for Nepalis it is a tough choice whether to leave or try to stay and build.
