I came across this story about Phillipenas being trafficked in Penang

It appears the police were the gangsters friends. This particular case was not terrible, but the report says Malaysia is the safest country in the world for Gangsters to do their trafficking work ..kind help from police and immigration
Tuesday, June 12, 2007 - US threaten economic sanctions
Bush Administration Malaysia to Human Trafficking Blacklist
"Tier 3" ranking "do not fully comply with the minimum standards (to fight trafficking) and are not making significant efforts to do so," which makes them eligible for U.S. economic sanctions.
then backs down October 19, 2007 - 12:56pm
Bush waived all sanctions against eight countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan _ all on the same grounds that doing so would serve the United States' strategic interests with these countries.

Pak Lah at Umno meeting Wednesday November 7, 2007
from the Star PM's speech at his parties meeting "Tackling social problems such as drug abuse, smuggling, human trafficking requires the cooperation of all parties. The spirit of “citizen patrols” that was once commonplace must be revived. Malaysian society, which has now become accustomed to material comforts must never lose the community spirit. The call of the Government to reactivate the “Rukun Tetangga” must be answered. The work of the police must be supplemented by public assistance. A strong national spirit must prevail as we confront increasing crime rates. I am confident that if neighbourhood patrols are restarted, the incidence of break-ins and thefts will decrease dramatically. I ask all UMNO members, and the members of Barisan Nasional component parties to step forward and set an example in assisting the Government to combat crime." in most countries the Police tackle crime !
| PM Brushes away calls for a Clean-up 1/12/07
Article in Harakah about the Bersih (clean up) rally where opposition marched to the King's palace to hand in a petition for electoral reform. The writer quoted he PM as saying "this is not part of our culture", by which one would guess he means ethnic Malay culture Adat, which Malays are particular about keeping to. So one would guess the PM is being a bit slippery in trying to convince people that protesting against the government is contrary to that culture which it is so important to keep.
The writer then lists some traditions.
- After a hard job you must pay a labourer, before the sweat dries up.
- You can only beat the cat if you catch the cat in the process, as it might have been another cat.
- Even then you can cause pain, but you shouldn't cause injury.
- If the cat already has the fish in it's mouth let it keep it. (Does that mean you you catch a corrupt officer you don't try to get the money back.
The writer claims the PM is shifting attention to the mode of the protest instead of addressing the issue.
The writer also mentioned a new tradition of awarding brooms (penyapu) to poor performing heads, giving them the message to clean up their act I suppose.
If the PM is saying "calls for a clean-up ARE NOT part of our tradition !" Does that mean that allowing the dirt IS part of the tradition.

Griffith lecture- on ABC Religion Report
|
Griffith lecture ..spoke extensively about Malaysia and Lina Joy pointed out LJ had a baptism certificate, also easy to leave Islam in Singapore - Also Muslims are given Human rights in other countries where they are minorities so they have a duty to give them to others
Pointed out hypocrisy Li Teo in Singapore who fought for LJ cos she is a Christian, but fought against gays cos this is a minority she doesn't like
Ended by saying "We fight for LJ not cos she is a Christian, not cos she has family values, but cos she is a human
Human Rights apply to all humans even humans not exactly like us: All nations, all faiths, All Races, All Sexual Orientations

Another case of a stupid judge persecuting the female victim.
Iran: The Story of Leila
(Crossing Continents BBC Radio 4 Thursday, 29 November 2007 )
"Sold into prostitution aged 9, then saved from the hangman's noose at 18, Leila tells her life story for the first time. Her life provides a rare insight into Iran's underbelly and is a tribute to the brave army of women fighting for human rights - with results. "
Her drug addicted family used the Iranian temporary marriage law to sell her into prostitution. Since a father has legal possession of his children she has no say. Later they married her to men for longer periods. She was sold to an old man already married of course. After a while he decided instead of his wife working he would prostitute her. The police raided the building when 2 other prostitutes were working there. So the first judge said "wow this is our town's den of vice", strong action must be taken. Since this girl from outside has been engaged in prostitution alll her life then clearly she is the seed in all this so I sentence her hang.", he didn't blame the man. This story was in the papers the HR lawyer from Tehran came down and got an appeal case with the district judge. She said to him "In all her life no one has given her chance in her whole life, you have the opportunity to give her a chance are you really going to deny her aswell ?" So he listened and gave a 1 year sentence providing she was released into a young girls charity home at the end of it. She's now a bit of a nutcase of course, she's never been to school, she self harms, so it's a big job for the charity too educate her and get her living in her own appartment. The lawyer said there were many many more similar cases. Then today the fishy story of a girl who died in police custody. She was a 27 year old lawyer who was arrested for sitting next to her fiancee and talking to him in a park. (This is the crime of kowat or proximity i.e. being alone with the member of the opposite sex with whom you are not related to.) After 2 days the police said she committed suicide and they won't release any details to the family. It's fishy as 1. At the time of death the police gave she was on the phone to her brother, 2. They said she hung herself from a doorknob !
Last month it was the story of the gang rape victim who was sentenced to 100 lashes for proximite cos at the beginning she had allowed herself to be enticed into sitting in the car with a unrelated man.
Every country will have 1 or 2 unfortunate outrageous incidents like death in the police cell, but it seems that Iran has a steady stream.
I think there is a huge difference between the normal people and the clerical ruling class.
The clerical ruling class have tried to create a conservative view of religion and a super virtuous society by placing enormous emphasis on tiny religious rules. Yet the situation on the ground is terrible with widespread poverty and drug addiction fueling widespread prostitution and the religious rules are being applied unjustly. They are being great champions of religious virtue, yet they allow these great injustices to go on ... it is sickening. Surely they can see when things are so clearly unjust and stop the abuse and twisting of religious laws
to cause them.
OK they say in their culture women are not equal to men, just possessions and servants, but the government could at least state that one room of the house be out of bounds for men.
| There is No Real Free Trade !
|
There is no free trade cos of minimum wage and other regulations.
The American factory owner has to pay US minimum wages, adhere to US environmental and safety regulations, the Chinese factory owner gets to benefit from low wages, but decreased efficiency cos the workers are less educated.
Bob's motorbike factory in the UK employs 30 workers.
Mr Chinese Billionaire employs 30,000 he pays his workers a pittance and lets them die in accidents - how is that free trade ?
It's only real free trade, when all the conditions on both sides are the same. Which is almost impossible. I guess that protectionism is even worse. Free trade should cause the differences to be eroded so they not exactly the same, but are more balanced. ... Not Finished
